The World of James Bond

Shaken, not stirred.

The World of James Bond
October 2015
Adobe Awards 2016, Semifinalist

This map is the result of my undying need to know everything James Bond - from the number of ladies he kisses in each film, to the cities he visits, to the cars he drives. This map shows it all and the connections between each. To view a high-quality PDF, click here, or scroll down to zoom.

Shaken, not stirred.

Ever wonder which James Bond made the most money? How about which actor flirted with Moneypenny the most? Or who killed the most henchmen? I have. So I did what anybody would do: I sat down with a martini and watched every 007 film (including the unofficial Never Say Never Again), and I got to know every actor, every recurring character, every gadget, every car, and every killer pun. Then I made this.

The name's Bond.

The classic 007 intro is just one of many Bondisms that I tallied and tracked to make this map. Others include martinis and units of alcohol consumed (Daniel Craig is by far the booziest James, drinking 24 units in Casino Royale); number of women kissed (that record goes to Roger Moore, kissing 27 women over just seven appearances); kills (see Roger Moore with 64 in Octopussy or Pierce Brosnan with 34 in GoldenEye) and killer puns (Sean Connery had eleven over seven outings); and times believed to be dead (Roger fooled his foes three times in A View to a Kill). I also looked at length, the longest being Spectre at 148 minutes, adjusted budget, the highest being Quantum of Solace at $257 million US, and adjusted gross earnings, the highest earner being 1965's Thunderball until Skyfall took over in 2012.

Shocking. Positively shocking.

The four Daniel Craig films realized the potential of the 007 universe, revealing it as one of the most in-depth and widespread in film. The World of James Bond is one of the most in-depth and widespread visualizations ever made about a single film franchise. I studied each film carefully, with my finger on the pause button and my laptop open to vehicle, weapon, and gadget databases, tracking every recurring character (those that have appeared in more than one film - remember Jaws and Sheriff Pepper?), every location he visited (the most common country outside of England being the United States) and the entirety of Q-Branch (see gadgets, weapons, and vehicles, like that one time Timothy Dalton rode a cello case in The Living Daylights). The map also shows motifs and themes, organizations mentioned, and endings (Sean Connery ended six of seven outings at sea, while Daniel Craig is the only Bond to take a villain into custody).

Sheer magnetism, darling.

The final print is 60″x36″ on fine art paper. One colour is assigned to each Bond actor, while a shade of that colour is given to each movie. You can follow a thread from each film through characters, locations, gadgets, vehicles, motifs, and endings. If you’d like to order a print, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

No, but I know a little about women.

Through my research, I've come across a lot of really cool information. Here are some highlights.

Notes: 1Although not an official EON Productions film, Never Say Never Again is included here for completeness. Every effort is made to be as accurate as possible. 2The number of times James Bond introduces explicitly himself as “Bond, James Bond.” Occasions where he does not complete the sentence or introduces himself simply as “Bond” are not included. 3Only drinks that are shown on screen and are either explicitly shown to be drunk or strongly implied to have been drunk are included. 4This figure includes 2 Vesper Martinis and half of one poisoned Vesper Martini. A Vesper Martini is defined as a dry martini made up of “three measures of Gordon’s [gin], one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet [aromatized wine]. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel,” not including the poison. 5This figure includes Vesper Martinis, as previously defined. 6Only drinks that are shown on screen and are either explicitly shown to be drunk or strongly implied to have been drunk are included. 7Only drinks that are shown on screen and are either explicitly shown to be drunk or strongly implied to have been drunk are included. 8Total budget, adjusted for inflation in 2015. 9Total international earnings, adjusted for inflation in 2015. 10A recurring character is one who appears in two or more films, including the unofficial production Never Say Never Again. 11Skyfall marks the first occasion on which two actors have portrayed M. It was also the first film to show M in combat. 12Many actors have portrayed M during the series, but Ralph Fiennes is the first to take over the role during a film. His name is revealed to be Gareth Mallory, the first occasion on which his name has been revealed. 13Felix Leiter is a CIA agent in all appearances except in A Licence to Kill, where is shown as a DEA agent. 14Anthony Dawson is credited as having portrayed Blofeld on screen in his two appearances. 15Eric Pohlmann is credited as portraying the voice of Blofeld over the on-screen appearance of Anthony Dawson in his two appearances. 16General Gogol is the head of the KGB in all appearances except for The Living Daylights, in which he is shown as having been transferred to the Soviet Foreign Ministry. 17Emilio and Maximillion Largo are the same character. The name was changed in the unofficial remake of Thunderball, Never Say Never Again. 18Adolfo Celi is credited as having portrayed Emilio Largo on screen, while Robert Rieti portrayed his voice in Never Say Never Again. 19Joe Don Baker previously portrayed villain Brad Whitaker, opposite Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights. 20Including only locations visited by 007 himself. 21Cray Key is a fictional location, actually filmed in Florida, USA. 22Crab Key, Jamaica is a fictional location, actually filmed in Northern Jamaica, cleverly made to look like a small island. 23San Monique is a fictional location, actually filmed in Ochos Rios in Jamaica. 24Both Isthmus City and the Isthmus Republic are fictional locations, actually filmed in Mexico City, Mexico. It is strongly believed that Isthmus City is a fictional representation of Panama City. 25At the time of filming Octopussy, control of Germany was split into the East and West. This is accounted for here. 26At the time of filming From Russia With Love, Serbia and Croatia were are a part of the former Yugoslavia. This is accounted for here. 27At the time of filming Octopussy, current Russia was part of the Soviet Union, as was Moscow. This is accounted for here. 28At the time of filming A View to a Kill, current Russia was part of the Soviet Union, as was Siberia. This is accounted for here. 29At the time of filming The Man With the Golden Gun, Macau was under Portuguese control. This is accounted for here. 30At the time of filming Skyfall, Macau was under Chinese control. This is accounted for here. 31At the time of filming You Only Live Twice, Hong Kong was under British control. This is accounted for here. 32At the time of filming The Man With the Golden Gun, Hong Kong was under British control. 33Palmyra, North Africa is a fictional location. A real city named Palmyra is located in Syria and is unrelated. 34Including only those gadgets, weapons, or cars developed by MI6’s Q-Branch or used by 007 himself. 35Although not actually a vehicle, 007 rides a cello case down a ski hill in The Living Daylights. 36This motion-sensing bomb used in Never Say Never Again was a rouse and in fact just a cigarette case.
